WordPress Backup Best Practices: What Business Owners Miss
Every WordPress maintenance conversation starts with backups — yet most business owners have never tested a restore. A backup you cannot restore is not a backup.
The 3-2-1 rule
Three copies of data, two media types, one off-site. Store backups outside your hosting account (S3, Google Drive, Dropbox via UpdraftPlus, BlogVault, or ManageWP).
Backup frequency
Weekly minimum for brochure sites; daily for WooCommerce with active orders. Backup before every plugin update.
Test restores quarterly
Restore to staging and verify pages, checkout, and forms. Many teams discover corrupt backups only during a crisis.
Popular backup plugins
UpdraftPlus (flexible), BlogVault (managed restores), Jetpack Backup (simple), WPvivid (migrations). Your maintenance provider should document which is used and retention period.
